This is a very welcome initiative from Microsoft and will help in reaching out to people in every strata of society. Now, the gates of knowledge will open to everyone. “Cannot use computer, do not know English”, will prevail no longer. Also, once the confusion in the mind of new users regarding computers lessens, their confidence will increase and eventually Microsoft Office 2003 Marathi will help accelerate the efforts of standardisation of Marathi on computers.

This software has many attractive features. Apart from the necessary ones like Interface in Marathi, Floating Keyboard, Find & Replace, Indic sort order and Marathi e-mail, the need to exchange text and database created in Marathi across different applications will now be fulfilled as Microsoft Office 2003 Marathi is based on Unicode. Ongoing work in Marathi in different branches of knowledge will cross the barriers of language and region. This will help institutions and provide boost to creation of Marathi software.

Today, the state of Marathi spelling and grammar is quite pitiable. It would definitely be of benefit if the rules of writing formulated by the Maharashtra State Sahitya and Sanskriti Mahamandal are made available through an add-on programme.

A Marathi spell check, punctuation parameters formulated by experts and a Marathi thesaurus are a must. This will highlight the richness of language and will help reduce meaningless repetition. This is one area in which I could contribute to Project Bhasha.
