The Cloister’s Pale contains accounts of the contributions of many a luminary, who adorned the University, academic progress of exceptionally high order, and, by the same token, in the national development. The work also portrayes an interaction between Mumbai and the University through diverse phases of their development.

Dr. Aroon Tikekar is one of the senior-most journalists and newspaper editors in India today. He was the Reference Chief in Times of India and Editor of Indian Express Group’s influential regional newspaper Loksatta for a decade (1991-2002). Subsequently, he was the Group Editor of Lokmat and Editor-Director of Sakal ". He has authored over 20 books in Marathi as well as in English and is considered a scholar on the 19th century India.

He was requested by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mumbai during its Sesqui-Centennial Year Celebrations for authoring the book.




Ms. Madhavi G. R. Kamat, partner, Aksharmaya, coordinated for the entire project with Author, Research Associate, Translator, Publisher, Printer and Vice-Chancellor’s Office, University of Mumbai. Project spanned two years of efforts including two English editions and one localised Marathi edition with additional chapter dedicated to the history of Marathi Department in University of Mumbai. Manuscripts were digitised by team in Aksharmaya.
